Prenatal Vitamins: B6 & B12

Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B12

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 is important for the development of the brain and nervous system, as well as forming red blood cells. Taking extra B6 during the first trimester may help with morning sickness, but the reason is unknown.

Best Food Sources

Best food sources of B6 include potatoes, turkey, avocado, spinach, and fortified food.

Supplementation

All values are based on daily serving size.

Thorne 12 mg
SmartyPants 2.5 mg
Kirkland 1.9 mg
VitaFusion 2.5 mg
NatureMade 1.9 mg
Metagenics 20 mg
Klaire 15 mg

Needed during pregnancy – 1.9 mg

Our Take: While there is a toxicity level, it is very high (100mg+). If you are suffering from morning sickness, taking a high B6 dose may be beneficial, leaving you with Metagenics, Klaire, or Thorne.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is important for the development of the nervous system, in combination with folate.

Best Food Sources

Best food sources of B12 include meat, fish, poultry, and milk.

Best vegan sources of B12 include fortified foods. This is one concern of veganism.

Supplementation

All values are based on daily serving size.

Thorne 200 mcg
SmartyPants 10 mcg
Kirkland 2.6 mcg
VitaFusion 8 mcg
NatureMade 5.2 mcg
Metagenics 120 mcg
Klaire 500 mcg

Needed during pregnancy – 2.6 mcg

Our Take: This seems to be an important vitamin, and there is no toxic level. Kirkland comes through with the bare minimum, and everything else seems to meet the quota. The more the better I suppose, but any supplement will do here.

Love this breakdown! As a freelancer, my schedule is unpredictable. B-complex is my go-to for mental clarity. It's about finding a balance between creativity and focus.
